About Water Gap Retreat
In 2007, after three decades as a successful textile artist, I felt the need to make a creative change — to move in a completely new direction that would allow me to integrate many other interests. Although my shibori-dyed fabrics have been used primarily for creating wearable art, I have always been fascinated by how beautiful they look when light shines through them — like fluid stained-glass windows. I began to dream of using them in tent-like structures to grace a special place … and to create a sacred space.
Coincidentally, I acquired that special place six years ago — a small campground at the water gap of the Shavers Fork, one of the healthiest and most magical waterways in West Virginia. I wanted to share it, and much else that I love about these ancient mountains.
A caring group of like-minded friends helped me craft a mission: to offer interesting weekend programs in this beautiful part of West Virginia, complemented by local music and locally grown, organic food.
Our first season included three wonderful workshops. Poet Anita Skeen led a weekend session on memoir; poet Doug Van Gundy conducted a workshop on nature-inspired writing; and folklorists Carrie and Michael Kline led a workshop in Appalachian singing.
In 2008, we are featuring fiber! We have planned several intensive workshops, each focused on a different textile skill, in July and August. Visit our WORKSHOPS page to learn more.
